EDUCATION

Do I need any prior knowledge of the fashion industry to be part of the
program? Do I need to know how to sew or have design experience?

No, you don’t! Project Fashion is open to all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Our program introduces emerging designers and entrepreneurs to the concepts, skills and techniques needed to pursue a career in the fashion industry.

What will I create during Project Fashion?

With all of our program sessions, you will have the opportunity to build your portfolio by participating in workshops where you style your own looks and design your own garments.

Who will be teaching classes?

All of our instructors have many years of industry experience and are excited to share their knowledge. If you’d like to set up a phone call with an instructor to learn more about the curriculum, send us an email at [email protected].

SAFETY

Who will be chaperoning the program?

There is one fully-trained staff member for every 10 students who attend the program, which means students will have plenty of support throughout the experience. Contact information for all Project Fashion staff is included in the Welcome Packet sent to each participating student and their family well before the start of the program. We are available by phone 24 hours a day should you need to reach us for any reason.

What happens if my child gets sick during the program?

If a student becomes sick or injured we will dedicate 100% of our efforts to ensure they get immediate attention from one of the city’s best hospitals. We are on call 24 hours a day and have trained chaperones with our students at all times. Parents are contacted immediately once a student shows any signs of sickness, injury or any type of personal issue that raises concern. We will always operate on behalf of parents in the event a student needs medical assistance of any kind, and are available throughout the program to respond to any parental concerns or to provide follow up.

Can you help monitor and/or administer medicine to my child?

Yes, please be sure to make note of any medications on the Medical Authorization form. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or specific needs.

Who can I contact in case of emergency?

Our program manager is the main point of contact in case of an emergency situation. You will also receive contact information for Experience headquarters in Seattle as well as for all of the program chaperones.

Travel

Are flights included in the cost of the program?

No, flights are not included in the cost of the program. See the Enrollment page for more details.

What should my child expect to pack for this trip?

Towards the start of the program, you will receive a packing list in your email that outlines what students will need to pack for the duration of the trip.

How much spending money should my child bring? Should they bring a credit card?

This depends on if your child wants to buy personal souvenirs and gifts for friends or family. If they want to buy simple gifts and inexpensive souvenirs, we suggest bringing $100. Though it’s not mandatory, bringing a backup credit card can be a good idea just in case. Sometimes, students choose to spend their own money on snacks and personal comfort items that they left at home.

For meals and activities, see what’s included in our program costs.

As an international student, will my child need a student or travel visa to visit LA?

Only international students who are traveling from a non-Visa Waiver Country need to obtain a United States travel or tourist visa to attend our program. International students entering the country who are from a Visa Waiver Country will need to submit a formal application through the United States ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). Please refer to the link for more details: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta

What dates should my child arrive and depart to/from the program? What airport should we use?

Students will fly into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Arrival date and departure date will depend on the selected program session. Please refer to our Programs page for the first and last day of each session.

We will be sure to meet students on campus for check-in whenever they arrive, but recommend that students arrive between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM so that they can participate in activities planned for the first day and meet their peers. For an added cost, we do offer airport pickup and drop off to and from LAX.

Who will be meeting my child at the airport? Will I have their contact information?

For those who paid the additional cost for pickup and drop off to and from LAX, the Project Fashion team will be greeting your child at the airport. Our program manager will have each student’s travel information and will be at the airport to greet them when they arrive. We have a process for texting and calling parents of students as soon as your child is safely in our care.

Our Experience App also allows parents to get in touch with our program manager and provides real-time location tracking.

If I am flying with my child to camp, is there a recommended hotel I can stay in?

There is a wide array of hotel options near LAX airport, making it one of the most affordable areas to stay in Los Angeles. Your most convenient option is the USC Hotel, which is located adjacent to the USC campus. Otherwise, there are a full range of options in nearby downtown LA. AirBnB is another great option.

Can I attend the closing ceremony?

If you are in LA at the end of one of our sessions, then we encourage you to join us at our closing ceremony dinner party! The dates of the closing ceremonies are included in the packet students receive after they apply for the program. Please send us an email to RSVP and let us know how many will be attending.

Housing

What are the living arrangements like at the dorms? Will my child have a roommate?

The dorms at USC are fully equipped with Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, air conditioning and a common area with a TV. All students will have a roommate, but don’t worry as we do our best to match students with someone they’re compatible with. If your child has a roommate request, please be sure to note that on the application or send us an email to let us know.

Will there be laundry service at the University of Southern California (USC) dorms?

Yes, there are laundry machines located in the dorms. Project Fashion will provide students with a laundry card so that they can do laundry as needed to stay clean and comfortable throughout the program.
